A Word About Quality

Please note… We do not sell hatchery or feed store quality poultry. Our breeding pairs have been carefully selected from top breeders around the country and our hatchlings are hand raised. We breed to the Standard Of Perfection and are focused on quality vs quantity. We rarely have pet quality birds available.

Pet Quality

Pet-quality birds can still be beautiful, healthy birds and wonderful companions. They simply have characteristics that make them less desirable for a serious breeding or exhibition program.

Pet quality does not mean there is something wrong with the bird. It simply means the bird is better suited as a companion than as breeding or exhibition stock. Please do not buy Pet Quality with the intention of breeding.

Breeder Quality

A breeder-quality bird may have one or more traits that keep it from being an ideal exhibition bird while still possessing qualities that can be extremely valuable in a breeding program.

A Call Duck may have an excellent round head, compact body and good type but have other features that might cost you points in the show ring.

A Sebastopol may have excellent body width and broad, quality feathering but lack the amount of chest curl, head/body shape desired in the show pen.

Good breeding is not about pairing two birds that each have the most exaggerated version of one trait. It is about understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both birds and selecting pairings that complement one another.

Sometimes a bird that is not your best exhibition bird may be one of your most valuable breeding birds.

Exhibition Quality and Exhibition Prospects

Exhibition-quality birds should represent their breed well as a complete package.

That means structure, proportion, balance, breed type, condition, and the characteristics unique to that breed all need to work together.

With young birds, we prefer the term exhibition prospect because development is not complete and there are no guarantees about how a bird will mature. It can take 2 years before before they mature and you really know what you have.

Evaluating Call Ducks: Look Beyond the Bill

One of the most common misconceptions about Call Ducks is that the shortest bill automatically belongs to the best bird.

Bill length is important, but it is only one part of the picture.

A quality Call Duck should also have a broad, rounded head, compact body, appropriate neck length, good carriage, correct color, round eyes centered in the middle of the head, proper wings and tail, correct size, good condition, and an overall balanced appearance.

An extremely short bill on a poorly structured bird does not make that bird exhibition quality.

Evaluating Sebastopol Geese: Feather Quality Matters

Sebastopol Geese are instantly recognizable because of their beautiful feathering, but more curl does not automatically mean better quality.

There is a major difference between simply having a lot of feathers and having quality feathering on a well-built bird.

Broad, substantial feathering creates a much different overall appearance than thin, narrow, stringy feathers. A goose may have plenty of curl but still lack the feather quality you would want in an exhibition or breeding bird.
